Do you know that over 70 million passengers travelled by air to or from Hong Kong each year pre-pandemic? And local airlines in Hong Kong emitted more than 20 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, equivalent to a half of the Hong Kong’s local carbon emissions (41 million tonnes). The question of how to make flying in Hong Kong more sustainable becomes a challenging issue, and at the same time, new approaches are emerging from the perspectives of airlines, businesses, and individuals.

She is the co-chair of the Energy & ESG committee of AmCham Hong Kong, and previously spearheaded ESG and corporate citizenship at Lenovo and BASF in Asia. She has been active in sustainability in the region since 1994.

Grace Cheung is the General Manager of Group Sustainability Department at Cathay Pacific. Since taking up her role in 2017, Grace has turned sustainability from a standalone specialist function to an integrated strategic and operational imperative in the airline group.
During Grace’s tenure, Cathay Pacific has committed for its net zero carbon emissions goal by 2050, supported by its mid-term target for using 10% sustainable aviation fuel(SAF) by 2030. The airline group is a founding member of Hong Kong Sustainable Aviation Fuel Coalition (HKSAFC)in 2024 and has also launched the first major Corporate SAF Programme in Asia in 2022. The airline has also cut more than 50% of its inflight single-use plastics (SUP) in 2023 compared to 2018.
Grace represents the airline in a number of industry working groups devoted to sustainability and environmental issues, including the ones at International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Oneworld Alliance.
My Sustainability Goals for 2024:
1. HK Government releases a more concrete policy to support SAF deployment in HK without negative impact on the competitiveness of HK’s role of international aviation hub.
2. The awareness of importance of SAF from the public is enhanced.

Ms. Assyl Ikhsan has joined the Transition Finance team in SCB Singapore as an Executive Director in Jul-2022. Main areas of focus are advisory and creation of financing solutions to support decarbonisation activities of the bank’s clients.
Previously, she was part of the Energy Transition Analysis team at BHP looking at transition solutions and trends in mining sector across the value chain.
Prior to BHP, she has worked at Temasek (Singapore) as FIG investment manager and JPMorgan (London, Hong Kong, Singapore) as FIG advisory and M&A banker.
Assyl holds a BA in Economics and Management from the University of Oxford.

Mr. Philip Siu is the Co-founder and CEO of EcoCeres, Inc. – a world-leading Bio-refinery Platform on sustainable biomass. He obtained his Bachelor and Master of Arts Degrees from Cambridge University in the 80s’ and completed the Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program in 2016.
In an illustrious career spanning 36 years prior to founding EcoCeres, Mr. Siu has led and achieved several ground-breaking milestones. At the turn of the new millennium, Mr. Siu led the design, construction and operation of an Aviation Fuel Tank Farm, the largest in scale of its kind in the world, under a 40 Years’ Franchise with the HK Airport Authority.
In 2008, he developed from ground the business platform on new energy, which aims to develop innovative solutions to upgrade low-value feedstock to high-value products. Sustainable biomass is a key choice of feedstock, and from that a new and independent business platform – EcoCeres evolved in 2021, of which Mr. Siu is the founding CEO. EcoCeres has a strategic focus on the conversion of waste-based biomass into a wide spectrum of biofuels and biopolymers, and is now one of the leading suppliers of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel. EcoCeres aspires to becoming a global leader in providing de-carbonization solutions much needed by the world to attain carbon neutrality.
My Sustainability Goals for 2023:
We will continue to increase our production of both SAF and cellulosic ethanol and hope to help Hong Kong become a SAF hub by cooperating with the Hong Kong government and local airlines to advocate for supportive policies and regulations to promote SAF development and adoption.
